font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">The goal of the project is to unveil the secrets of the human brain and uncover the mechanisms responsible for cognitive processes, learning and consciousness.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">The key-word for HBP is\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-weight: bold;\">multi-disciplinarity<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">: HBP is not only a fruitful ground for pioneering research in the field of neuroscience, but also a successful experiment of collaboration between several different scientists, bridging together medical doctors, biologists, physicists,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">HBP started in 2013, with the so-called\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"font-size: 15px; font-weight: 400;\">ramp-up<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0phase, during which the backbone and the main scientific targets of the project have been defined. In this starting phase, calls have been opened to the scientific community\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">in order to extend the objectives of research and to address specific goals.\u00a0 A<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0dedicated scientific board selected the projects that won the competition\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">among the several applicants, forming\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">what is now called the\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 15px; font-weight: bold;\">Systems and Cognitive Neuroscience\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">Sub-Project\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">(SP3)<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">. One of the <a href=\"https:\/\/apegate.roma1.infn.it\/?page_id=835#HBP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">4 winner projects<\/a> was\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 15px; font-weight: bold;\">WaveScalES<\/span>, led by\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400; background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"mailto:pier.paolucci@roma1.infn.it\">Pier Stanislao Paolucci<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0With it, APE Lab and INFN entered the HBP project since its first Scientific Grant Agreement phase (SGA1, 2016-2018), guiding an\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">international collaboration aimed at investigating the role of the different expressions of electrophysiological activity of the cortex during deep sleep. Activities went on during\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">the SGA2 (2018-2020), followed by SGA3 in 2020 and came to a conclusion in 2023. In these years, we have consolidated our position in the field, gaining experience and extending our network and lines of actions. O<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">ur past and present research interests and efforts are focused on several items (<a href=\"https:\/\/apegate.roma1.infn.it\/?page_id=335\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">theses available<\/a>):<\/span><\/p><ul style=\"font-size: 15px; font-style: normal;\"><li Cortical slow wave activity (SWA) characterises deep sleep, anaesthesia <strong>and<\/strong> coma, but a complete understanding of the underlying mechanisms and of the <strong>emergence towards wakefulness and consciousness<\/strong> is still lacking. The WaveScalES project aims at uncovering the <b>link between Sleep and Learning<\/b>, bridging theoretical models, experimental activity and dedicated simulations.\u00a0The name has been chosen to recall the different aspects of the project:<\/div><ul><li style=\"font-size: 15px; font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><b>slow waves<\/b>, as the distinctive signature of the brain activity which manifests during deep sleep and constitutes our main target of research;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-size: 15px; font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\"><b>multi-scales<\/b>, to underline our aim of addressing the process at the different scales of investigation (microscale \u2014 the cells; mesoscale \u2014 cortical columns and cortical areas;\u00a0 macroscale \u2014 the bedside);<\/span><\/li><li>E for <b style=\"font-size: 15px; font-style: normal;\">Experiments<\/b>, S for <b style=\"font-size: 15px; font-style: normal;\">Simulations<\/b>, since experimental data and computer-based realizations of theoretical models are the tools we leverage for our research purposes.<\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-tab-title elementor-tab-mobile-title\" aria-selected=\"false\" data-tab=\"4\" role=\"tab\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-8484\" aria-expanded=\"false\">Inference methods<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-8484\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"4\" role=\"tabpanel\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-8484\" tabindex=\"0\" hidden=\"hidden\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s42003-023-04580-0\">Simulations approaching data<\/a> is the goal we aim at achieving when devising mean-field models of cortical activity. It represents the first outcome that APE Lab delivered in the field of spiking simulation.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\">Originally devised as a mini-application for testing the parallel computing architectures in the framework of <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 15px; background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/apegate.roma1.infn.it\/?page_id=656\">ExaNeSt<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 15px;\">, its performance has been improved to include short- and long-range connectivity and synaptic plasticity, and to be extended towards multi-areal cortical activity. It represents the first outcome that APE Lab delivered in the filed of brain data analysis.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">SWAP has been largely employed in the analysis of experimental data. Currently, efforts have been directed to the improvement of the pipeline towards <strong>robustness and flexibility<\/strong>, aimed at extending the range of applicability (including the outcome of simulations) and at integrating it into the HBP<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0platforms.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Among recent results obtained with SWAP, we have evaluated the <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\">differentiation of cortical areas<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">, and we highlight the presence of <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\">gradients of excitability<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">, in particular along a direction from fronto-lateral towards occipito-medial regions.
